Opening 6 October 2011
For EAST HAND at the Smokehouse, Flyover Arts will showcase a collection of new works in this
their launch year. The works are all commercial and for sale. Each member artist will exhibit 6
major works in the large exhibition with smaller artworks and prints also available. Guest exhibitors
include textile designer Michelle House and the Bengali Women’s Tapestry Group at St Hilda’s.
Proposed for October 2011 for one month. The launch night, Thursday 6th October, will also
feature a Water City Festival East Hand concert under the directorship of Frank Creber and
conductor Michael Bochmann.
EAST HAND: The rationale
The east end is rapidly reinventing itself with buildings and homes designed with computers and
built by machines. If we are not careful and don’t continue to celebrate the origins of great craft,
our lives will be anaesthetized by modern towers of minimalist cubes, dominated by clear glass,
neutral-coloured walls and no individual character or ornamentation. For Flyover Arts it is the
intervention of the human hand and sensibility to the human craving for artworks that depict
people, character, organic form and abstracts in a range of formats that deserves celebration.
Drawing, painting, stone sculpture, ceramics, stained glass, hand-printed textile and tapestry will
all feature at The Forman’s Smokehouse Gallery.
